The moment I arrived in Kensington, I felt like the main character. It was early, the streets still quiet and empty, and there I was — in a new city, running on only a few hours of airplane sleep and somehow full of energy. I set out searching for good coffee and a traditional English breakfast. What I ended up with wasn’t traditional or English, but it was delicious. I had a cappuccino and lamb shakshuka paired with charcoal bread.
Growing Confident Through Solo Travel
London made me feel confident. Solo travel always does. It’s proof that I can make it anywhere, and I’m grateful to do things that strengthen and empower me. There’s something grounding about navigating a new place alone — like I’m writing my own origin story one discovery at a time.
A City That Moves Through the Rain
The rain stood out the most. It was soft rain — barely-there rain — the kind you can walk through without an umbrella. It lasted no more than ten minutes and never interrupted anyone’s plans. People simply carried on.
Kensington and Brixton: Two Heartbeats
I loved how different Kensington and Brixton felt. Kensington was calm, mellow, and sophisticated. I found beautiful coffee shops, luxury cars, and minimalist architecture. Brixton, on the other hand, was lively, colorful, and unapologetically expressive. There I saw London’s youth — their style, music, and conversations. Both sides added to the city’s charm.
Finding Community Abroad
London taught me that community exists everywhere. Yes, my cousin visited. Yes, my Krio heritage connects me to the city. But even with this being my first time exploring London, I felt appreciated, respected, and welcomed everywhere I went. Kindness met me at each turn — and it felt natural to return it.
What London Taught Me About Home
I would be lying if I said London didn’t make me appreciate America more. Some things are simply easier in the States — getting an Uber in five minutes, not thinking twice about drinking something other than bottled water. Spoiled American things to say, maybe, but honest. I loved London, but it made me see the comforts of home more clearly.
There’s More London Waiting For Me
And still, I have so much London left to see. I want to wander through the street art in Shoreditch and finally check off the tourist spots in Central London. I hope the next trip brings more friends, more fun, and more good food. Something tells me the city has more stories waiting for me.
