Travel has shaped the way I see the world and how I care for myself within it. As the founder of Journeys by Jalia and a flight attendant with over two years of experience flying for a major U.S. airline, I’ve learned how much the travel environment can influence the body. Travel comes with plenty of tempting snacks and indulgences, and enjoying one is perfectly fine. The key is balance. Aim for meals that support steady energy and wellness: fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and minimally processed options. Açai bowls, salads, and high-protein snacks are excellent choices to keep you feeling comfortable and energized during your journey.

3. Wear Comfortable, Travel-Appropriate Clothing
It is entirely possible to look polished while still dressing comfortably for travel. Choose breathable fabrics and supportive footwear that allow you to move easily. If you experience swelling or wish to encourage circulation, compression socks can be especially helpful—particularly on longer flights.

4. Incorporate Movement Whenever You Can
Use the time before boarding to stretch, walk, or simply stand and move your legs. Encouraging blood flow before you settle into your seat helps reduce swelling and muscle tension. Even small moments of movement can make a noticeable difference in how your body feels in the air and after landing.

5. Prepare for Travel Headaches
Some travelers experience headaches during flights that ease upon landing. To minimize discomfort, stay hydrated, eat regularly, and avoid hairstyles or accessories that place tension on the scalp. If you take medication for headaches, keep it in your personal carry-on so it’s easily accessible mid-flight.

6. For Women: Be Mindful of Cramps at Altitude
Many women notice that menstrual cramps can feel more intense while flying. Plan ahead by packing any medication or supplements you typically rely on, and keep them in a small personal bag so they are within reach when needed. Supporting your body in the ways you know work best can make your travel day much more comfortable.

7. Carry Cleansing Wipes
Airports and aircraft are high-traffic environments, and high-touch surfaces can accumulate germs. Travel-sized cleansing wipes are helpful for tray tables, armrests, seat belts, and other surfaces you’ll interact with. A simple wipe-down helps reduce exposure and supports your overall well-being while traveling.

8. Lead with Kindness
Travel places many people outside of their usual routines, and patience can sometimes run thin. Kindness—toward yourself, fellow travelers, and crew—makes a meaningful difference. A thoughtful approach helps create a smoother experience for everyone onboard.
